A Study on the Changes of Some Components in Rat Treated with Carbon Tetrachloride and Panax Gineseng Extract

Abstract
This study was devised to observe the protective effects of ginseng extract (fat soluble components) on the acute intoxication of carbon tetrachloride (CC14) .
The male albino rats from pure strain, weighing 220g to 250g, 98 heads, were used for experimental animals. They were divided into five groups, the control, the CC14 injected, the ginseng extract injected, the ginseng extract injected befor and after CC14 injection.
The contents of total cholesterol in the liver and serum, hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Ht) were determined quantitatively.
The results obtained are summarized as follows;
1. The contents of the liver cholesterol of ginseng extract injected groups were not changed significantly compared with the control group, but that of CC14 injected groups were remarkably increased up to 50% at 2 days after CC14 injection, and then the values were almost recovered to the level of control group at 8 days after CCI4 injection.
2. Although the liver cholesterols were rapidly increased up to 50% by CC14 injection only (1 to 2 days after injection), the increase of the cholesterol content was inhibited by several times injection (once per day) of the ginseng extract before and after CCI4 injection.
3. The contents of the serum cholesterol were also increased rapidly at 2 days after CC14 injection, compared with the control group, as well as the changing of the liver cholesterol, but the elevated contents of cholesterol were almost recovered by the injection of ginseng extracts before and after CC14 injection.
4. The hemoglobin and hematocrit values were not affected, generally, by injection of CCI4 or ginseng extracts.
According to the above results, it could be suggested that the CC14 intoxication was induced to increase the cholesterol levell in the liver and serum, and the effects of CC14 injection were protected by the several times injection of the ginseng extract before or after CC_(4) injection.
